Facilities

EMS curriculum classes are held on the Jamestown campus, in the Public Safety facility. Based on strong administrative and community support, this state of the industry facility was completed in 1998. The Public Safety Building houses the Emergency Medical Science, Fire Protection, and Law Enforcement programs. Features of the facility specific to the EMS program include a general use, basic life support lab, an advanced life support lab meeting infection control standards, and classrooms specifically designed for program needs. A simulation lab featuring high-fidelity simulation manikins is being developed. The Public Safety facility incorporates an environmentally controlled vehicle bay with bleacher seating, which allows the space to be converted into a class space for sheltered practical exercises. Located adjacent to the bay is a scenario room where mock calls are staged. It is designed with an apartment mock-up, a jail cell, and other spaces. A self-contained ventilation system allows special munitions to be used, and the area can be filled with non-toxic smoke, simulating a hazardous area. An emergency vehicle-driving pad is used for emergency vehicle operator training and a drill tower for rescue exercises is available.

Following is a list of areas dedicated to the EMS program: (PS=Public Safety facility)

Complimenting the facilities is a strong base of educational equipment. GTCC has a fully equipped ambulance that is state permitted through Guilford County EMS. The Program uses the vehicle for simulating emergency vehicle operations evolutions as well as educational scenarios involving the ambulance. Guilford County EMS can call the unit into service during peak load periods. A Zodiac inflatable boat is available for use to teach water rescue, and the wooded areas around campus are used for search training and outdoor scenarios. Critical care equipment to support the education of an entry-level paramedic compliments the didactic instruction, including 12 lead-capable ECG monitors, advanced airway and ventilatory equipment, portable high-fidelity patient manikins, and advanced life support task trainers.
