How To Succeed

1. ATTEND CLASS, LAB , AND CLINIC ON A REGULAR BASIS

2. Prepare BEFORE coming to class/ lab/ and clinic. This may mean reading the textbook assignment, reviewing the videos, or computer assisted programs in the computer lab, and preparing for lab and clinic the night before.

3. When reading the assignment, STOP and THINK, about what you are reading. Summarize in your own words what the important parts of the Section were and write them in the margin of the text. If you cannot do this, reread the material. Then when studying for an exam, you only need to read the notes in the margin, and not reread the text.

4. Allow ample time to study. This prevents cramming the night before an exam. For EACH HOUR in class, AT LEAST THREE hours outside of class is usually necessary for proper study time.

5. After lecture/lab, take time to recopy or at least reread your notes. Make them legible while they are still fresh in your mind. Paraphrase the notes if you can. Some students use the following technique: Divide the page into two columns, write the lecture notes in the first column and your notes from the textbook reading in the second column.

6. Join a weekly study group. Recent studies document the effectiveness of study groups. Use the virtual chat room for this if your course is Web enhanced. Study groups work because you have to explain concepts to someone else If you don't know it, you can't explain it!!

7. Take the on line quizzes BEFORE the exam if you are enrolled in a Web-Enhanced course.

8. When studying for the exam, then, reread only the summary remarks in the text margin, and the highlighted portion of your notes. Practice writing out test questions while studying. After you have finished studying, take your test. If you missed a question, or guessed, go back and reread that material.

9. Budget your time, and discipline yourself to do this every week.
