Lateral Entry
|
| What is Lateral Entry? |
Lateral Entry is an alternative route to teaching that allows qualified individuals to obtain a teaching position and begin teaching immediately, while earning a license. Lateral entry teachers must complete specific courses towards licensure within a specified period of time. To be considered for lateral entry, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university. Lateral Entry might be the ideal vehicle for someone who has practical experience in a field and wants to share those skills and experience with young people who are still in school.
To apply for a lateral entry teaching position in the Guilford County School System, visit www.gcsnc.com/work4gcs.htm.

There are two options that support your pursuit of lateral entry certification.
Option 1: The GTCC Lateral Entry Certificate Program (C55430)
If you are interested in becoming a lateral entry teacher and you already have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, then you may complete the classes you need to meet these NC Department of Public Instruction general pedagogy competencies:
• Understanding the Learner: Human Growth and Development (EDU 244)
• Learning Theory/Learning Styles/Motivation (EDU 243)
• Educational/Instructional Technology (EDU 271)
• Classroom Management and Instruction (EDU 163)
• Home/School/Community Collaborations (EDU 131)
• School Policies/Procedures (EDU 245)
• Instructional Methods*
• Literacy/Reading Methods*
• Meeting Special Learning Needs/Exceptionalities/Diversity* The EDU courses listed above will be taught on a rotating basis based on demand.
*Classes for these competencies must be taken at one of our partnering senior institutions.
The RALC (Regional Alternative Licensing Center) will provide you with a program of study that outlines exactly what competencies you need to address AND identifies any additional content courses you may need for full licensure.
Option 2: The Guilford County Schools Alternative Certification Track (GCS ACT)
The GCS ACT is a partnership between Guilford Technical Community College and Guilford County Schools to provide lateral entry candidates with an 18 month-long, locally customized licensure and support program that serves as an alternative to a university affiliated program or Regional Alternative Licensure Center (RALC) program of study.
