Tutor Guidelines

Purpose
The purpose of the tutoring program is to help students become independent and successful learners by assisting them to develop good study skills, to increase their understanding of course content, to enhance their self-confidence, and to develop a positive attitude toward learning.

Procedures
The following information is designed to help tutors understand their responsibilities.
If you have questions about this information, please talk with the Tutoring Center staff.

Eligibility
Students are eligible to tutor in the equivalent of any course in which they have received a grade of A or B and have received a recommendation from their instructor. Students may also tutor in a course in which they are currently enrolled if they are referred by their instructor. Once a student has applied to be a tutor, the Tutoring Center will send a recommendation form to the appropriate instructors.

Complete the Application
Complete the front and back of the attached Tutor Application. Include all information requested. Return this application to the Tutoring Center. Since tutors are part-time employees of GTCC, you will need to complete a GTCC employee packet once
you have been selected as a tutor. The GTCC employee packet materials must be completed before you begin tutoring.

Training
A number of tutor training sessions will be held throughout the year. All tutors are expected to participate in these activities and are paid for their participation. The dates for training sessions will be posted in the Tutoring Center. If you cannot attend a training session due to scheduling conflicts, please let the Tutoring Center staff know. In addition, a set of tutor training videotapes is available for tutors to watch in the Tutoring Center. Viewing these tapes is considered part of the tutor's work hours and may be recorded on your time sheet.

Record Keeping
Keep an accurate record of the hours you tutor on your Monthly Time Sheet.

It is the tutor's responsibility to keep a record of each of his/her tutees' attendance on a blue Tutee Attendance Record card. Record the time and your initials at the end of each session.

At the end of each tutoring session, complete the yellow Tutor Daily Record sheet. This information helps the Tutoring Center staff know how your tutoring sessions are progressing.

Tutors are required to maintain accurate records. Time sheets, attendance cards, and daily record sheets must be kept in the tutor’s folder in the Tutoring Center. See the Tutoring Center staff for instructions on how to complete these forms properly.

Pay Rate and Pay Checks
Pay Rate and Pay Checks
The hourly pay rate for tutors is $8.50 per hour.

Pay checks are issued once a month on or about the 20th of the month for the hours reported for the previous month. If your address changes, you must complete an employee change of address form. See the Tutoring Center staff for this form.

Location of Tutoring Sessions
Tutoring must take place in the Tutoring Center unless permission is given by the Tutoring Center coordinator to conduct sessions elsewhere on campus. Tutees may receive up to two hours of tutoring per week. Typically, each session is scheduled for one hour but shorter or longer sessions may be arranged as dictated by schedules and needs.

Tutor's Schedule
Contact the Tutoring Center as soon as possible if the original schedule that you submitted changes. In other words, let us know if the times you are available to tutor change.

Messages
Check for messages at the staff desk in the Tutoring Center.
Leave messages for your tutees with the Tutoring Center staff if you are unable to contact your tutees directly.

Attendance
You are expected to attend all tutoring sessions and arrive on time. If you must be late or cannot be here, notify the Tutoring Center as far in advance as possible. We keep a record of tutor and tutee attendance. If a tutee fails to come for a scheduled session, please notify the Tutoring Center staff.

Evaluations
Complete a program evaluation form before the end of the semester.
These forms are available in the Tutoring Center.
