Tutor Sessions

The First Session
Begin the first tutoring session by getting to know your tutees and letting your tutees
get to know you. Talk with your tutees about their academic interests and goals.
Assess the tutees' academic needs. Encourage your tutees to talk to you about their strengths and weaknesses.

Find out why the students have requested a tutor. Many students hold the mistaken notion that tutors are there to answer their questions and to check their assignments. Let your tutees know in a nice way that you are there as a resource, and you will assist them in asking and answering their own questions, processing and organizing information, fine-tuning their existing study skills, and learning new techniques to add to their repertoire of study skills. Begin working at a level comfortable to the tutees and to you.

Later Sessions
When a student comes to you for tutoring, strive to set a positive and productive tone for each session. At the beginning of each session, discuss what the student hopes to accomplish during that session. Formulate a set of realistic goals that are satisfactory to you and the tutee. Make sure the tutee understands the current material before starting new material. For group tutoring, you will need to assess the needs of each tutee, and then determine how you can best utilize the tutoring session to meet the needs of the individuals within the group.

Strive to help your tutees become independent and successful learners. It is not your job to teach the course, only to help reinforce concepts your tutees are having difficulty understanding. Encourage your tutees to come prepared. Ask to see completed homework, graded tests, class exercises, and other study material. Do not do your tutees’ homework or any other assignment that is to be turned in for a grade. You may go over completed assignments, tests that have been graded, class notes, or other class material. Make sure your tutees know that tutoring sessions are not time for doing homework. Help your tutees to understand the course material, so they can do their homework independently.

Determine if your tutees have good study habits. Share some of your own successful study and note-taking techniques and assist your tutees in planning study time. If a tutee is behind in class work, assist him/her in making a schedule to complete assignments.

Tutoring is not a substitute for attending class.
If you find that a tutee is not attending class, please inform the Tutoring Center staff.

Remember, positive reinforcement is a powerful motivational tool for learners of all ages. Do all you can to show concern for students as learners and as people in general. Approach your tutees with a positive attitude and center the session on them at all times.

End each session by asking your tutees to summarize what has been covered, and help them to evaluate the progress made toward goals agreed upon at the beginning of the session.
