JAMESTOWN, N.C. - For the second consecutive year, Guilford
Technical Community College students swept the competition in the
Brand Your Biscuit Challenge. The annual contest gives Greensboro
college students an opportunity to work in teams to develop and
pitch their most creative breakfast or lunch item to Biscuitville,
a locally-grown and scratch-made restaurant chain.
GTCC claimed first, second and third place for its innovative
entries. Twenty-three teams from seven Greensboro colleges and
universities submitted ideas.
Students Dominique Alston (Culinary Arts), Dedria Cooke (Culinary
Arts and Hospitality Management), Lasha Couser (Culinary Arts and
Hospitality Management) and Willie Smith (Culinary Arts and
Hospitality Management) won first place and $1,000 for their
Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sandwich featuring a creamy ranch aioli
flavored with a kick of Texas Pete hot sauce and topped with a
fried green tomato.
Hospitality Management students Thomas McAlister and Krystal Page
won second place and $500 for their Southern Fried Pork Chop
Sandwich, pork tenderloin stacked with lettuce, a fried green
tomato, fried okra spears and spicy mayonnaise on a Brioche
Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management student Sarah Mayer
claimed third place and $250 for her Southern Sticks, chicken and
waffles served on a stick with maple Dijon for dipping.
The students pitched their product to Biscuitville executives on
April 18 at co//ab, a coworking and entrepreneurial space for
college students and budding entrepreneurs in downtown Greensboro.
Teams were given five minutes to pitch their idea and explain why
their product would be successful in the food market.
