Location
Assessment Center, Room 217, Medlin Campus Center, Jamestown Campus

Hours
Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am-6:00 pm,  Friday, 8:00 am-1:30 pm
2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 9:00 am-10:00 am

(Note: An applicant or student who appears for the test prior to the closing time shown above will be admitted to the test. A COMPASS Card from the Admissions Department and a picture ID is required to be presented to sit for the test.)

New Students
All new students who enroll at the college in an academic program must take the GTCC Placement Test.
Scores of 510 and 520, verbal and math on the SAT, respectively, will waive the requirement for the placement test, except for allied health, limited enrollment programs. Evidence of success in college English or math at another college will waive the respective test.

COMPASS
The GTCC Placement Test is COMPASS, a computer administered instrument. The COMPASS is an assessment of skills in written English, reading and math. The COMPASS results will assist counselors and advisors, as well as yourself to properly schedule appropriate classes for your initial term of entry and beyond.

Advising

Learn to use advisement as a key to program success

Advisee: you, the student
Advisor: faculty, an instructor in your program of study

As a student, advisee, you should become familiar with:

  • Your program requirements for the degree, diploma or Certificate
  • General academic requirements of the college such as grading and attendance
  • Transfer requirements, if appropriate
  • Academic calendar dates for advising, registration, exams, etc.

Plan for registration

Make goals (personal, educational and career)

For registration (work with advisor)

  • Review the schedule of classes before meeting with an advisor (schedules are usually available one week before registration begins)
  • Select course options and write them down (a registration worksheet is provided by the Registrar and/or departmental secretaries)
  • Make an appointment with your advisor and be on time

For goals (work with advisor, instructors, and counselors)

  • Academic performance
  • Program change and career options
  • Transfer to senior institutions, if appropriate

Drop/Add

A student may drop or add a course (schedule adjustment) before or immediately after registration. Adjustments may be made prior to or after tuition payment (see Business Office regarding refunds). No classes can be added after the seventh calendar day of the term. Classes can be dropped through the 70% point of the term for a specific class. That date is published in the academic calendar for full-term classes (mini-mester class withdrawal dates are published on the syllabus for each course).

Students must complete all information identified on the form. No signatures are required to add or drop classes during the drop/add period. However, signatures on the Schedule Adjustment Form are required for late adds and any drops prior to the 70% point of the term. No official drops are permitted after the 70% point of the term.

Withdrawal

Begin the withdrawal process by obtaining a Schedule Adjustment Form at the Records Department in the Medlin Campus Center or from a Student Services staff on other campuses. Complete the information on the form as indicated. You must use the form to withdraw from a course or to totally withdraw from the college.

Course Withdrawal: Take the form to your instructor and secure his/her signature. Return the form to the Records Department (Jamestown) or the Student Services staff (on other campuses). The withdrawal will be processed on the date submitted. No withdrawal is accepted after the 70% date of the course.

Withdrawal from College: If a complete withdrawal is being processed, the Schedule Adjustment Form must be signed by each course instructor, as well as a counselor. Return the form to the Records Department (Jamestown) or the Student Services staff (on other campuses). The withdrawal will be processed on the date submitted. No withdrawal is accepted after the 70% date of the term.

After the 70% date consideration may be given in the case of medical emergencies or other emergencies requiring absence from the college for the remainder of a term. In this case a student must contact each instructor for consideration and determination of final grade. Final grade is awarded at the discretion of the instructor. A grade of incomplete (I) may be given as determined by the instructor.
