Obtaining Services

A student may choose to disclose his/her disability at any time before, during, or after the admissions process. However, students are encouraged to contact the disAbilities Services Office soon after they apply so that appropriate accommodations and/or services can be arranged. It is the student's responsibility to request accommodations and/or services since GTCC staff cannot ask about disabling conditions.

To request accommodations and/or services a student must:

• Visit the disAbility Access Services Office for a general orientation and, depending on the time of self-disclosure, discuss arrangements for placement testing.
• Provide documentation as requested to determine and support appropriate accommodations and/or services. When current documentation has not been received, the counselor may recommend that interim services be provided until appropriate documentation is received (up to one term).
• Meet with a DAS Counselor to discuss documentation and to determine appropriate accommodations and/or services. Necessary paperwork is discussed and signed at this time, including a release form which allows the DAS counselor to discuss student's needs with faculty as necessary.
• Contact faculty regarding accommodations.

A student without documentation who desires information about a specific disability should:

• Meet with a disAbility Access Services counselor for an informal assessment and referral to appropriate community resources.

An instructor who suspects a student may be experiencing difficulty because of a disability, but has not received information from the student and the disAbility Access Services Office should:

• Discuss concerns with the student and provide general information about available services on campus, including disAbilities Access Services. Do not assume that a disability is the reason for the difficulty.
• Call the disAbility Access Services Office for referral information.
