Medication Administration Aide Training Program

GTCC offers a Medication Administration Aide course for Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who have an active listing on the nurse aide registry. This course provides a wonderful opportunity for career enhancement to nurse aides who are interested in working in skilled nursing facilities as a medication aide.

This course is designed to meet training requirements for the North Carolina Board of Nursing Medication Aide Certification. The training prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to long term care residents. Course topics include scope of duties; legal and ethical responsibilities; administration of medications by various routes; infection control; and documentation including commonly used abbreviations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate and are then eligible to take the state competency exam administered under NC Division of Health Services Regulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Medication Aide is employed in a long term care/skilled facility and must also be listed on the Nurse Aide 1 Registry. Therefore a requirement for course enrollment is that the student is an NA 1 with active listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide 1 registry.

Note: Medication Aides who pass medications in long term/skilled nursing facilities should not be confused with Medication Technicians who pass medications in adult care settings such as assisted living or group homes.

On first day of class you MUST present the following:

  • Documentation that you are currently listed on the North Carolina Nursing Assistant Aide Registry. You may access and print this information from the website at ncnar.org
  • Copy of current driver’s license or ID card or Passport
