All-College Read: From Apartheid to Rainbow Nation: South African Popular Music in Protest and Freedom

April 04, 2019

12:00 PM - 01:00 PM

Jamestown Campus – AT Auditorium

This presentation offers an overview of the work of some of the most influential musicians and singer/songwriters in South Africa from the apartheid era to the present. It reflects the vibrant diversity of South African music, and how popular music is a fusion of indigenous traditional music as well as Western music styles and genres. Ultimately, this presentation should serve as an introduction to those who are interested in exploring how South African music utilizes music, language and culture as a tool to celebrate the diversity of its rich heritage while also critiquing and 'talking back to" the colonialist power structures that have tended to oppress, stereotype and denigrate African people.
