From the Court to the Classroom: Bailey Dutton Finds Her Stride at GTCC
Published on: April 21, 2026
Bailey Dutton did not plan on playing basketball again.
Originally from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, Dutton is pursuing a degree in business administration and accounting, with plans to transfer to a four-year university and eventually earn a master's degree in finance. She is expected to complete her program in 2027.
Like many Guilford Technical Community College students, Dutton balances multiple responsibilities, managing coursework, a job, and the demands of being a student-athlete. Rather than seeing those commitments as overwhelming, she embraces them as part of her journey.
"Juggling a job, schoolwork, and a college sport is something challenging, yet fun for me," she said. "I love to have a busy schedule and multi-task as much as possible."
After stepping away from basketball after her freshman year of high school, she thought that chapter was closed. But in summer 2025, an opportunity at GTCC changed her plans. After learning about an opportunity to try out for the women's team, she decided to take a chance. That decision led to a new challenge, a new community, and a renewed sense of confidence.
"I enjoyed the time with my teammates, as we learned the game of basketball together," Dutton said. "Each practice became harder and harder, but at the end of the day, we always tried to encourage and help each other out."
“Bailey stands out as a truly exceptional student-athlete who brings confidence and balance to everything she does, whether it’s work, academics, or basketball.” said Erica Handy, GTCC women’s basketball coach and academic advisor. “She refuses to take shortcuts and that commitment has shaped her into a strong, dependable leader on and off the court.”
Now, Dutton is not only back on the court as a member of the GTCC women's basketball team, but she is also building a future in finance. At GTCC, Dutton has found more than just a program. She has found an environment that supports her growth both inside and outside the classroom.
A positive surprise about attending GTCC, she said, has been the level of support available to students.
"The professors and staff always make sure your questions are answered and will help with most of the homework that you have," Dutton said. "The conversations I have had with tutors are something I will not forget, as they give out so much information not only about school, but life as well."
Her passion for finance stems from a desire to help others.
"What interested me in my program is the number of people I would be able to help once I get into my field of work," Dutton said. "Many are uncertain about their finances and often get confused about how to save, invest, and allocate their money correctly."
That purpose, combined with inspiration from a high school personal finance teacher, set her on a path toward a career focused on guidance, clarity, and impact. Through her experience balancing athletics and academics, she has developed strong time management skills and a mindset rooted in discipline and accountability.
"I am a strong believer that the more work you put into your life, the more success and rewards you will have," Dutton said.
After completing her associate degree, Dutton plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a degree in finance, with the long-term goal of helping others better understand and manage their financial futures.
From stepping back onto the court to stepping confidently into her academic and career goals, her journey reflects the power of taking chances and staying committed to growth. At GTCC, Dutton is not just preparing for what comes next. She is building the skills, confidence, and direction to succeed wherever her path leads.
