There is currently a skilled welder shortage equating to great job security. Amazing, right?

You might also be surprised to discover that a career in welding is very different than you think.  These roles are dynamic and challenging. They offer you rewarding opportunities to harness new knowledge; develop craftsmanship; learn scientific principles; and be exposed to today’s most advanced technologies.

Welding technology has changed dramatically. It is high-tech and high skilled. Many younger, technology-geared students are drawn to welding worksites where teams frequently work with lasers, robotics, computer programming, and other complex technologies. In addition to welders, many other professional-level experts are needed from certified inspectors and engineers to specialized sales teams.

As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist prepares supplies, equipment, and instruments for the operation; prepares patients for surgery; maintains aseptic conditions; and assists the surgeon during the operation. 

The GTCC Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The GTCC Surgical Technology program has a program retention average of 72.2% for 2012-2016 and a job placement average of 94% for 2011-2015.

RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

The program supports the mission of the North Carolina Community College System and the mission of Guilford Technical Community College by sharing its commitment to serving the community. The program produces competent entry-level technologists by providing students with a sound education in radiography.

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography. This is the course required by the NC Insurance Commission for eligibility to take the State Licensing Examination. Upon successful completion of this 60 hour course, you will be able to discuss automobile insurance, general liability exposures and insurance, workers’ compensation, commercial fire and other insurance, homeowners’ insurance, crime insurance and government fire and casualty insurance.

The Therapeutic Massage program prepares you with the training and skills for success in a rapidly growing, dynamic profession. The curriculum consists of 659 hours of classroom and clinical training that is designed to prepare students to practice as a professional Massage Therapist in a variety of employment settings.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina Massage and Bodywork Therapy Licensing Examination (MBlex) to become a licensed Massage Therapist in North Carolina. Physics is a science that investigates the fundamental concepts of matter, energy, and space as well as the relationships among them. Physics is the backbone of many other fields including astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering, which is evident in fields, such as biophysics, chemical physics, astrophysics, space physics, and geophysics. Regardless of your career choice, an understanding of physics is necessary to understand how our world works. Physics at GTCC serves as one of the core science option for students seeking associate degrees in science at GTCC and basic core science option for associate's and bachelor’s degrees at public and private universities within North Carolina and beyond. Many of our students transfer to a 4-year university or are completing their science pre-requisites for graduate school.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program at GTCC prepares you to work in direct patient care, providing rehabilitation to patients and clients in a variety of health care settings. Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) treat people of all ages under the direction and supervision of physical therapists.

The profession of phlebotomy is taught through didactic, student laboratory, and clinical experiences. You will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. You will be taught specimen handling, processing and accessioning. You will learn the theory and principles of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory tests and perform the tests in the student laboratory.

Phlebotomists play a vital role in the lives of all patients and are a critical member of the health care team. The accurate collection of specimens, is the foundation on which clinicians monitor a patient’s health status.

Employment of phlebotomists is projected to increase by 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians work in settings such as hospitals, and diagnostic medical laboratories. Starting hourly wage is $11 to $13.

This course has two instructional delivery methods, both will have 96 hours of instruction. The face to face class will have 96 hours, all in a traditional classroom setting.  The hybrid version of this course is a combination of 24 hours face to face and 72 hours online.

Pharmacy technicians are supervised by licensed pharmacists and perform duties that do not require the pharmacist’s expertise, like labeling prescription bottles and helping patients to complete medical insurance forms. Technicians have several duties that may include: assisting with prescriptions by counting pills, measuring medications, and labeling products; verifying prescriptions from doctors; and maintaining patient records and insurance information.

Technicians do not consult with patients who have questions about their medications – instead, they refer the clients to the pharmacists. Most pharmacy technicians work in retail pharmacies, like the ones in your local grocery stores. Other pharmacy technicians fill hospital positions, work in wholesale industries or find employment with government organizations.

If this sounds like you, perhaps you should consider a career as a Payroll Specialist. They input data from time sheets, production records, or individual time cards to computerized payroll system. They are also responsible for balancing payroll runs, producing federal, state and local tax payments, and answering employee questions and troubleshooting issues.

This is a 190-hour hybrid course; 48 hours face to face and 142 hours online.

The Paralegal Technology curriculum prepares you to perform legal tasks and assist lawyers with many types of legal work. A paralegal does not practice law, give legal advice, or represent clients in a court of law but they can assist with any type of legal work that a lawyer does. The Paralegal Technology program's primary goal is to provide you with the legal knowledge and practical skills necessary to become a competent, ethical professional.

Paralegals play an important role in allowing lawyers to provide high-quality, reasonably priced legal services. As a result, it is a fast-growing field. Paralegals, sometimes also called legal assistants, work in law firms, government agencies, business organizations, and anywhere else that a lawyer might work. After completing a two-year degree many paralegals go on to get a bachelor’s degree and some even go to law school.

OHSA training provides the General Industry standard for the necessary safety education for employees and leadership.  OHSA – 10 is geared to the entry-level employee, safety committee members, or individuals seeking a safety certification prior to employment.  OHSA – 30 is geared toward an organization's leadership, team leaders through plant management with responsibilities for personnel, plant safe operations and OSHA standards compliance.

The Office Administration program prepares you for employment in administrative support positions in a dynamic workplace. These include the following:

Course work includes extensive and in-depth training in Microsoft Office, including integration of the Office tools, customer service, and oral and written communication.

Successful graduates qualify for clerical/administrative positions in most businesses or industries, including government and education. You will also be prepared to sit for the Microsoft Office Specialist exams in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.

This 50-hour course consists of a brief review of the NA I theory curriculum, selected NA I skills, and preparation for the state written and skill exams. Successful completion of this refresher course will provide individuals with a review of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be demonstrated on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

Note: If you have taken the North Carolina NNAAP test three times within a two-year period, and failed, you are ineligible to take a refresher class and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course. References to this rule may be found in the NC Nurse Aide I Candidate Handbook) Additionally, if your license expired prior to July 2013, you are ineligible for the refresher and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course. 

Additional Note: If your goal is to enroll in Nursing School, this course MAY NOT meet the required pre-requisite for the school you are applying to. You are encouraged to research this before registering.

Registered Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals in the United states and the most trusted profession as well. GTCC offers an Associate Degree in Nursing that prepares you for licensure as a Registered Nurse. RNs assist individuals, families, and communities to achieve and maintain health. The RN develops a plan of nursing care and coordinates the implementation of the plan of care with the healthcare team. Nursing care is both interdependent, for example, reliant on physicians, and independent as nursing professionals.

Employment opportunities occur in a variety of settings including hospitals, medical offices, urgent care centers, home healthcare, industry, schools, and long term care facilities.

The NCP RIBN program is four years of seamless nursing education leading to two degrees, an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree. It is a collaborative dual enrollment program of GTCC and North Carolina A & T State University.

Students will be enrolled in both GTCC and North Carolina A & T State University (NCAT) for the first 3 years, taking most of the coursework at GTCC. Classes at NCAT will be offered online during that time. Upon completing year 3 successfully, students graduate with an Associate Degree in Nursing and are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Year 4 is at NCAT completing the bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Many hospitals require new graduates to have a bachelor’s degree upon hire or to gain a bachelor’s degree within a few years of hire. The bachelor’s degree is considered foundational for professional advancement.

GTCC offers a Medication Administration Aide course for Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who have an active listing on the nurse aide registry. This course is designed to meet training requirements for the North Carolina Board of Nursing Medication Aide Certification. The training prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to long term care residents. Course topics include scope of duties; legal and ethical responsibilities; administration of medications by various routes; infection control; and documentation including commonly used abbreviations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate and are then eligible to take the state competency exam administered under NC Division of Health Services Regulation.

Are you Spanish/English Bilingual? Do you enjoy helping people? If you’ve answered yes, a career as a Medical Interpreter may be right for you. Medical Interpreters typically work in healthcare settings and help patients communicate with doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. Interpreters must have a strong grasp of medical terminology and the common words for those medical terms in both languages.

The Quick Careers Medical Interpreter program consists of a series of courses* designed to not only prepare students for a career as a Spanish/English Medical Interpreter but also to prepare them to earn Medical Interpreter Certification.

This 192 hours of training includes:

This course introduces the principles and standards for professional interpretation as established by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare. The student will study body systems and all medical terms will be taught in both languages.

Spanish/English Medical Terminology training Includes:

Case Studies Practice (60 hours of training)

The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares you to be a multi-skilled health care professional qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.

Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.

The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares you for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies to assist in areas, such as mental health, child care, family services, social services, and rehabilitation. In addition, the Substance Abuse concentration prepares you to assist in drug and alcohol counseling, prevention-oriented educational activities, rehabilitation with recovering clients, managing community-based programs, counseling in residential facilities, and the pursuit of four-year degrees. Health Information Technology gives you the skills needed to classify, code, process, and report various forms of health information for multiple types of medical facilities.

Course work includes medical terminology, medical insurance and billing, electronic health records, Microsoft Office, anatomy and physiology, and extensive training in medical coding systems. You will learn to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals through hands-on learning both in the classroom and through mandatory clinical rotations in real-world health care settings.

Successful graduates qualify for positions related to coding, reimbursement, cost control, quality management, research, and system design. In addition, graduates are also eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam through AHIMA and/or the Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) exam through AAPC.

The Ford ASSET (Automotive Student Service Educational Training) program is the product of a partnership between Ford Motor Company, Ford/Lincoln dealerships, and GTCC.

The ASSET program allows you to get on-the-job training at sponsoring Ford and Lincoln dealerships while earning an Associate Degree in Automotive Systems Technology. During the work-based training, which takes place for eight weeks out of every sixteen-week semester, you will work full-time in the dealership while earning both college credit and a salary from the dealership.

A substantial benefit of this partnership is the availability of new Ford and Lincoln training vehicles for hands-on instruction at GTCC. Additionally, Ford Motor Company provides the college with components, tech data, computer-based training products, and Ford specialty tools to ensure that the ASSET students get the best possible training to prepare them for a career as a Ford service technician.

Every home and business depends upon an electrical supply providing plenty of work for skilled technicians. You have the option of pursuing either a degree, diploma, or certificate in Electrical Systems Technology. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in the Electrical Systems Technology field. Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) technicians operate specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic cardiac information for physicians. In just a few months, you could be a member of the medical profession conducting EKG diagnostic tests needed by physicians and physician extenders  to save lives.

Most EKG technicians work full time in hospitals. Other opportunities are found in doctors' offices, medical laboratories and outpatient clinics. The work requires stamina due to frequent standing and positioning patients with disabilities for an EKG. Shifts can include working days, evenings and weekends because hospitals continually need diagnostic testing.

In 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that job openings for cardiovascular technologists and technicians, including vascular technicians, will increase 10 percent from 2016 to 2026 – faster than the average rate of other occupations. Job openings for cardiovascular technicians, in general, are expected to grow as the large baby boomer population ages, thus upping the demand for diagnostic cardiac testing to assess various heart conditions.

At GTCC, you can complete the EKG training program in just under 2 months, inclusive of 96 clock hours. Your studies will cover cardiac anatomy and physiology, heart disease, pacemakers, medical terminology and ethics. You would gain practical training in the operation and maintenance of EKG equipment. Additionally, you would practice using 12-lead electrodes and interpreting EKG strips that provide data on heart performance. You may also learn about Holter monitors and cardiac stress testing. Graduates of approved training programs are eligible to sit for national certification examination. Most employers prefer or require this certification. Beginning pay is $14 to $16 per hour.

You can access these courses anywhere you have access to the internet at the times that are most convenient to you. A new session of each course starts monthly. Courses run for six weeks and are composed of twelve lessons that become available on Wednesdays and Fridays, representing 24 hours of instruction. If you’re ready for the chance to learn a skilled trade in a field that is certain to be in demand for as long as people have the need for transportation, and where you can make above average income, then Collision Repair could be the right choice for you! At GTCC, we offer a curriculum aimed at getting you into the workforce quickly and effectively! We train you on “state-of-the-art” equipment, using the industry endorsed I-CAR curriculum. GTCC’s collision repair program is NATEF accredited and has won the Skills USA state championships for collision repair 13 times between 2002 and 2017.

The Collision Repair Program at GTCC offers three pathways to help you meet your goals.

• Certificate- Designed with a short time frame in mind, the certificate program is 16 weeks and is only offered in the fall. It covers the basics that will give you enough knowledge and skillset to enter the workforce at an entry level position.
• Diploma- Composed of three semesters, this pathway is designed to produce a technician that can immediately begin work as an apprentice in a shop where, depending on your skill level, you may remain under a senior technician for as little as 30-90 days.
• AAS Degree- The Associate Degree program is only if you are looking to push your skills even further with advanced collision classes, including mechanical repair, vehicle detailing, shop management, and additional classes designed to offer you the foundational and advanced knowledge required to work in and advance into leadership roles.

Are you considering a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology? Or are you entering the workforce as an engineering technician who performs an essential role as you work alongside land surveyors and engineers providing support? Some of the tasks you will learn include preparing construction documents with 3D CAD software, testing construction materials for regulatory compliance, and performing various calculations for drainage, earthwork, pavement, utility layouts, and land surveys. Would you like to learn how to build your own house? Do you want to have your own construction company?  The carpentry program is a hands-on training program. Students in the carpentry program build a house from footings to roof with one of our non-profit partners. You could learn how to operate small equipment to dig footings, operate industry standard building equipment, and tools. You will learn how to read prints and understand terminology associated in construction. Residential codes and Green Building techniques will be applied throughout the course. This will help you pursue your General Contractors license.

If you are interested in becoming a commercial pilot, then the Career Pilot degree is for you.  This could mean flying for an airline or a private corporation or flying for the military or a government agency.  This degree does require flight training and is focused on providing you with a fundamental knowledge of flight concepts, aerodynamics, meteorology, aircraft systems, airline operations, flight safety practices, and human factors.  In order to graduate with the Career Pilot degree, you must obtain your FAA Commercial Pilot certificate.

If you already have a degree in another field but are interested in learning the material covered in the ground school classes for private pilot, instrument, and commercial as well as meteorology, then the Career Pilot Certificate may be a good option for you.

Cardiac monitor technicians, also known as telemetry technicians, monitor multiple patient’s heart activity and interpret heart rhythms from a central monitoring center covering multiple acute care locations. They play a vital role in the lives of cardiac patients and are a critical member of the health care team.

This comprehensive Cardiac Monitor Technician Certification Course prepares you to function as Cardiac Monitor Technicians in the acute healthcare setting. This course will include fundamental information on anatomy and physiology of the heart and cardiovascular system, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical legal ethics, and communication with other healthcare team members, and intensive ECG monitor strip interpretations. Additionally, you will spend 28 hours participating in the clinical environment working with Cardiac Monitor Technicians.

Employment of cardiac monitor technicians is projected to increase by 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians work in settings such as hospitals, and diagnostic medical laboratories. Starting hourly wage is $11.

The Biotechnology Program at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is a collaborative educational program offered by Alamance Community College (ACC) and GTCC. Students are able to complete the first two semesters as well as some selected general education courses from the second year at GTCC. Students who successfully complete at least the first two semesters at GTCC will be admitted to the Alamance Community College program and will be able to complete the program requirements at ACC. Alamance Community College will award the Associate of Applied Science degree to all students who meet degree requirements.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is an accredited program of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education & Training Standards Commission. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the written Comprehensive State Certification Examination, which is one of the many requirements mandated by the North Carolina Administrative Code for employment as a police officer or Deputy Sheriff. The academy is a full-time program conducted over a period of 17 weeks and consisting of 654 hours of training. Class sessions are held Monday through Friday starting at 8:00 a.m. with the schedule varying depending upon the training topic of the day. Occasional night training is mandated while enrolled in the daytime session. 

Certification

Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) course, and the state certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate of completion. Upon satisfactory completion of all Academy requirements and a passing score on the Commission administered state examination, the student will be eligible for probationary certification as a law enforcement officer or Deputy Sheriff. Those graduates who complete the academy as sponsored Cadets are now eligible for employment and have one year from the date of the exam to be duly appointed and sworn as a law enforcement officer in NC.

Motors and Controls introduces a broad range of motor types and control systems.  It provides an overview of the electric motor operation, selection, installation, control, and maintenance.  Every effort is made to present the most up-to-date information to currently reflect the current needs and state of the industry.

Furniture Sewing introduces skills needed to sew upholstered furniture and covers operation of standard industrial sewing machines. Topics include machine operation; safety; terminology; adjustment and maintenance; and threading and sewing straight lines, corners, curves and welts.

AutoCAD and Revit are widely used CAD software. AutoCAD is used primarily as a drafting tool, while Revit is primarily used for building information modeling (BIM). The Aviation Systems Technology Program provides you with the knowledge and skills to qualify for an aircraft mechanic’s certificate with airframe and/or powerplant ratings. The curriculum is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under 14 CFR Part 147, which governs aviation maintenance schools. This is a limited enrollment program.

GTCC Aviation has relationships with local, regional, and national employers who have constant demand for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. You can apply for open internship and apprenticeships along with full time or part time employment during and after program completion.  

Boeing’s recent market study highlights that aircraft technician demand in the US will continue to increase over the next 15-20 years due to aircraft deliveries, market segment growth, and retirement of an aging workforce.

If you are interested in an aviation-related career involving flight operational support, then the Aviation Management degree is for you. This could involve working in a corporate flight department, or managing a flight school, or working in flight support operations at an airline or in the aircraft maintenance or manufacturing industry. This degree does not require flight training and is focused on providing you with a fundamental knowledge of flight concepts and terminology pertaining to meteorology, aircraft systems, airline operations, and flight safety practices.

If you already have a degree in another field but want some background in aviation and flight operations, then you can do one or both of the certificate options. Option A covers management principles, aircraft systems and basic flight operations. Option B covers aviation operations management, flight safety principles, air transportation industry specifics, supply chain management and aircraft structures.

This is your gateway to a very mentally stimulating job field in which you will commonly be called upon for installation, inspection, testing, adjusting, or repairing all manner of Aviation Electronics. Upon completion of this program, you will have a better understanding of electronics and the role they play in today’s aviation industry. You will have also learned and honed your troubleshooting skills to be able to understand and analyze complex avionics systems on the aircraft.

The Associate in Engineering (AE), NC A&T State University Transfer program is intended for students who plan to transfer to NC A&T and study either civil engineering or mechanical engineering. In this program, students take general education and pre-major electives at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and then complete their bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering after transferring to NC A&T.

Civil engineers design construction projects and build systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Mechanical engineers design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain machinery including motorized systems.

Admission into the engineering programs is highly competitive, and admission is not guaranteed.

This training is designed as an introduction for new maintenance professionals or as a refresher for the veteran employee, to give these professionals the knowledge and tools necessary to work effectively in the multi-family and apartment housing industry. Course material is structured to the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians exam (CAMT). The CAMT program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the course is designed by the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI), and GTCC is a partner of the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA).

This 96 hour training is comprised of classroom, online, and hands-on lessons and assignments pertaining to maintenance and repair of the following:

• Interior and Exterior structures
• Electrical Systems
• Plumbing
• Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
• Appliances

As well as safety, emergencies, time & project management, teamwork, and much more.

The AMQCP Structures Assembly program is a 17-week course, divided into three main technical certificated areas, each a prerequisite to each other: Introduction to Structures (IS), Manufacturing Core Skills (MCS), and Structures Assembly (SA). 

Introduced within the early stages of the course are a Careers Readiness Certificate (CRC) and Human Resource Development (HRD) components. Both are very important constituents for future employee opportunities. 

Graduates of this program will be readily prepared to face the many challenges for entry-level employment in the sheet metal structures environment. The Composite Technology Level 1 program is a 3-week course that instructs the layman and skilled professionals about the fundamentals of advanced composite fabrication, repairs, and processes. Advanced composites are used in many applications and continues to be a primary consideration when replacing other structural components for the reason of its great strength-to weight advantages.

Graduates of the program will be readily prepared for entry-level employment in the composite manufacturing environment. The course introduces the many fundamentals of advanced composites, and upon completion of the course, the successful graduate will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of advanced composite structure fabrication, repair methods, materials, and application techniques.

• Learn about the reinforcement materials and resins used for producing wet layups, prep laminates, and sandwich panel layups.
• Familiarization of common equipment such as the single/dual hot bonders, oven, autoclave, vacuum tables, and moisture tester.
• Use the various heat sources available with advanced composites from heat blankets, infrared lamps, to hot air machines.
• Perform some of the common processes used with advanced composites.
• Produce standard vacuumed layups for laminate and core fabrications.
• Accomplish repairs on laminate and sandwich core assemblies.
• Test the product and perform simple destructive and non-destructive techniques.

State and federal regulations require an Activity Director working in an assisted living or a skilled nursing facility to complete a state approved Activity Training course. By completing this 60 hour course, you will receive a certificate of completion and can use this course as a step toward national certification for Activity Directors.

The NCP RIBN program is four years of seamless nursing education leading to two degrees, an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree. It is a collaborative dual enrollment program of GTCC and North Carolina A & T State University.

Students will be enrolled in both GTCC and North Carolina A & T State University (NCAT) for the first 3 years, taking most of the coursework at GTCC. Classes at NCAT will be offered online during that time. Upon completing year 3 successfully, students graduate with an Associate Degree in Nursing and are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Year 4 is at NCAT completing the bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Many hospitals require new graduates to have a bachelor’s degree upon hire or to gain a bachelor’s degree within a few years of hire. The bachelor’s degree is considered foundational for professional advancement.

Mathematics includes the study of algebra, probability, statistics, number theory, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, analytic reasoning and problem-solving skills. In this program, students take general education and pre-major electives at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and then complete their bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering after transferring to NC A&T.

Civil engineers design construction projects and build systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Mechanical engineers design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain machinery including motorized systems.

Admission into the engineering programs is highly competitive, and admission is not guaranteed.

The GTCC Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares you for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies to assist in areas, such as mental health, child care, family services, social services, and rehabilitation. In addition, the Substance Abuse concentration prepares you to assist in drug and alcohol counseling, prevention-oriented educational activities, rehabilitation with recovering clients, managing community-based programs, counseling in residential facilities, and the pursuit of four-year degrees. All programs include core courses that emphasize development of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The Substance Abuse concentration course work includes classroom and experiential activities oriented towards the twelve Core Functions, intervention techniques, and the biological/psychological/sociological processes of addiction. Graduates in the Substance Abuse concentration can obtain certification by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board after successfully completing the program and passing the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) exam.

Successful graduates qualify for positions related to coding, reimbursement, cost control, quality management, research, and system design. In addition, graduates are also eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam through AHIMA and/or the Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) exam through AAPC.

The Ford ASSET (Automotive Student Service Educational Training) program is the product of a partnership between Ford Motor Company, Ford/Lincoln dealerships, and GTCC.

The ASSET program allows you to get on-the-job training at sponsoring Ford and Lincoln dealerships while earning an Associate Degree in Automotive Systems Technology. During the work-based training, which takes place for eight weeks out of every sixteen-week semester, you will work full-time in the dealership while earning both college credit and a salary from the dealership.

A substantial benefit of this partnership is the availability of new Ford and Lincoln training vehicles for hands-on instruction at GTCC. Additionally, Ford Motor Company provides the college with components, tech data, computer-based training products, and Ford specialty tools to ensure that the ASSET students get the best possible training to prepare them for a career as a Ford service technician.

The Computer Integrated Machining program is designed for entry level positions in manual and computer numeric control (CNC) machining. Courses include blueprint reading, metrology, computer aided drafting (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), manual machining (mills & lathes), CNC mills & lathes. It is a trade for an individual who likes working with his or her hands.

The skill sets developed allow you to take a design concept/idea from your mind to paper (creating a blueprint) or computer (CAD drawing) and operate various pieces of equipment to manufacture that design. It allows you to take control of your concept from start to finish and have a physical object in your hands at the completion.

If you’re ready for the chance to learn a skilled trade in a field that is certain to be in demand for as long as people have the need for transportation, and where you can make above average income, then Collision Repair could be the right choice for you! At GTCC, we offer a curriculum aimed at getting you into the workforce quickly and effectively! We train you on “state-of-the-art” equipment, using the industry endorsed I-CAR curriculum. GTCC’s collision repair program is NATEF accredited and has won the Skills USA state championships for collision repair 13 times between 2002 and 2017.

The Collision Repair Program at GTCC offers three pathways to help you meet your goals.

• Certificate- Designed with a short time frame in mind, the certificate program is 16 weeks and is only offered in the fall. It covers the basics that will give you enough knowledge and skillset to enter the workforce at an entry level position.
• Diploma- Composed of three semesters, this pathway is designed to produce a technician that can immediately begin work as an apprentice in a shop where, depending on your skill level, you may remain under a senior technician for as little as 30-90 days.
• AAS Degree- The Associate Degree program is only if you are looking to push your skills even further with advanced collision classes, including mechanical repair, vehicle detailing, shop management, and additional classes designed to offer you the foundational and advanced knowledge required to work in and advance into leadership roles.

Are you considering a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology? Or are you entering the workforce as an engineering technician who performs an essential role as you work alongside land surveyors and engineers providing support? Some of the tasks you will learn include preparing construction documents with 3D CAD software, testing construction materials for regulatory compliance, and performing various calculations for drainage, earthwork, pavement, utility layouts, and land surveys. A challenging and rewarding career begins with the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Civil Engineering Technology.  A career that allows you to be a part of the survey, design, and construction of civil infrastructure projects from concept through completion.

Coursework includes basic engineering principles and technical skills to carry out planning, documenting, and supervising tasks in land development, public works, and facilities projects. Instruction in communication and computational skills will enable you to conduct material testing, field and laboratory testing, site analysis, estimating, project management, plan preparation with CAD, hydraulics, environmental technology, and surveying.

Would you like to learn how to build your own house? Do you want to have your own construction company?  The carpentry program is a hands-on training program. Students in the carpentry program build a house from footings to roof with one of our non-profit partners. You could learn how to operate small equipment to dig footings, operate industry standard building equipment, and tools. You will learn how to read prints and understand terminology associated in construction. Residential codes and Green Building techniques will be applied throughout the course. This will help you pursue your General Contractors license.

If you are interested in becoming a commercial pilot, then the Career Pilot degree is for you.  This could mean flying for an airline or a private corporation or flying for the military or a government agency.  This degree does require flight training and is focused on providing you with a fundamental knowledge of flight concepts, aerodynamics, meteorology, aircraft systems, airline operations, flight safety practices, and human factors.  In order to graduate with the Career Pilot degree, you must obtain your FAA Commercial Pilot certificate.

If you already have a degree in another field but are interested in learning the material covered in the ground school classes for private pilot, instrument, and commercial as well as meteorology, then the Career Pilot Certificate may be a good option for you.

The Biotechnology curriculum is designed to meet the increasing demands for skilled laboratory technicians in various fields of biological and chemical technology. Course work emphasizes biology, chemistry, mathematics, and technical communications.

Graduates may find employment in various areas of industry and government including research and development, manufacturing, sales, and customer service. 

The Biotechnology Program at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is a collaborative educational program offered by Alamance Community College (ACC) and GTCC. Students are able to complete the first two semesters as well as some selected general education courses from the second year at GTCC. Students who successfully complete at least the first two semesters at GTCC will be admitted to the Alamance Community College program and will be able to complete the program requirements at ACC. Alamance Community College will award the Associate of Applied Science degree to all students who meet degree requirements.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is an accredited program of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education & Training Standards Commission. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the written Comprehensive State Certification Examination, which is one of the many requirements mandated by the North Carolina Administrative Code for employment as a police officer or Deputy Sheriff. The academy is a full-time program conducted over a period of 17 weeks and consisting of 654 hours of training. Class sessions are held Monday through Friday starting at 8:00 a.m. with the schedule varying depending upon the training topic of the day. Occasional night training is mandated while enrolled in the daytime session. 

Certification

Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) course, and the state certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate of completion. Upon satisfactory completion of all Academy requirements and a passing score on the Commission administered state examination, the student will be eligible for probationary certification as a law enforcement officer or Deputy Sheriff. Those graduates who complete the academy as sponsored Cadets are now eligible for employment and have one year from the date of the exam to be duly appointed and sworn as a law enforcement officer in NC.

The Aviation Systems Technology Program provides you with the knowledge and skills to qualify for an aircraft mechanic’s certificate with airframe and/or powerplant ratings. The curriculum is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under 14 CFR Part 147, which governs aviation maintenance schools. This is a limited enrollment program.

GTCC Aviation has relationships with local, regional, and national employers who have constant demand for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. You can apply for open internship and apprenticeships along with full time or part time employment during and after program completion.  

Boeing’s recent market study highlights that aircraft technician demand in the US will continue to increase over the next 15-20 years due to aircraft deliveries, market segment growth, and retirement of an aging workforce.

If you are interested in an aviation-related career involving flight operational support, then the Aviation Management degree is for you. This could involve working in a corporate flight department, or managing a flight school, or working in flight support operations at an airline or in the aircraft maintenance or manufacturing industry. This degree does not require flight training and is focused on providing you with a fundamental knowledge of flight concepts and terminology pertaining to meteorology, aircraft systems, airline operations, and flight safety practices.

If you already have a degree in another field but want some background in aviation and flight operations, then you can do one or both of the certificate options. Option A covers management principles, aircraft systems and basic flight operations. Option B covers aviation operations management, flight safety principles, air transportation industry specifics, supply chain management and aircraft structures.

This is your gateway to a very mentally stimulating job field in which you will commonly be called upon for installation, inspection, testing, adjusting, or repairing all manner of Aviation Electronics. You will learn how to use Basic test/repair equipment such as Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, and Soldering Irons.  You will also experience plenty of hands-on time with current Flight Line Test Equipment such as the IFR 4000 (Communication Systems Test set), IFR 6000 (Navigation Systems Test set) and Several Different ADTS (Air Data Test Set) Systems. Upon completion of this program, you will have a better understanding of electronics and the role they play in today’s aviation industry. You will have also learned and honed your troubleshooting skills to be able to understand and analyze complex avionics systems on the aircraft.

The Therapeutic Massage program prepares you with the training and skills for success in a rapidly growing, dynamic profession. The curriculum consists of 659 hours of classroom and clinical training that is designed to prepare students to practice as a professional Massage Therapist in a variety of employment settings.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina Massage and Bodywork Therapy Licensing Examination (MBlex) to become a licensed Massage Therapist in North Carolina. Students will also receive a certification in Neuromuscular Therapy American VersionÔ (NMT), which will open doors in medical settings such as Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Chiropractic and others.

The profession of phlebotomy is taught through didactic, student laboratory, and clinical experiences. You will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. You will be taught specimen handling, processing and accessioning. You will learn the theory and principles of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory tests and perform the tests in the student laboratory.

Phlebotomists play a vital role in the lives of all patients and are a critical member of the health care team. The accurate collection of specimens, is the foundation on which clinicians monitor a patient’s health status.

Employment of phlebotomists is projected to increase by 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians work in settings such as hospitals, and diagnostic medical laboratories. Starting hourly wage is $11 to $13.

This course has two instructional delivery methods, both will have 96 hours of instruction. The face to face class will have 96 hours, all in a traditional classroom setting.  The hybrid version of this course is a combination of 24 hours face to face and 72 hours online.

Pharmacy technicians are supervised by licensed pharmacists and perform duties that do not require the pharmacist’s expertise, like labeling prescription bottles and helping patients to complete medical insurance forms. Technicians have several duties that may include: assisting with prescriptions by counting pills, measuring medications, and labeling products; verifying prescriptions from doctors; and maintaining patient records and insurance information.

Technicians do not consult with patients who have questions about their medications – instead, they refer the clients to the pharmacists. Most pharmacy technicians work in retail pharmacies, like the ones in your local grocery stores. Other pharmacy technicians fill hospital positions, work in wholesale industries or find employment with government organizations.

This 50-hour course consists of a brief review of the NA I theory curriculum, selected NA I skills, and preparation for the state written and skill exams. Successful completion of this refresher course will provide individuals with a review of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be demonstrated on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

Note: If you have taken the North Carolina NNAAP test three times within a two-year period, and failed, you are ineligible to take a refresher class and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course. References to this rule may be found in the NC Nurse Aide I Candidate Handbook) Additionally, if your license expired prior to July 2013, you are ineligible for the refresher and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course.

GTCC offers a Medication Administration Aide course for Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who have an active listing on the nurse aide registry. This course provides a wonderful opportunity for career enhancement to nurse aides who are interested in working in skilled nursing facilities as a medication aide.

This course is designed to meet training requirements for the North Carolina Board of Nursing Medication Aide Certification. The training prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to long term care residents.
