Nursing: Nursing Assistant I Training Program

The Nursing Assistant program consists of 214 hours of classroom and clinical studies and takes approximately three months to complete. Nurse Assistants work in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, private homes, home health agencies, assisted living facilities, hospice, and medical doctors' offices. Completion of the program qualifies you to sit for the N.C. State Nursing Aide examination and if successful leads to placement on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may want to look at our NA Refresher Course to see if you qualify to take that abbreviated course.

No classes are scheduled at this time. Please email Amy Byerly at aeleonard@gtcc.edu to request being added to email database to stay informed of future classes.

  1. You must be at least 18 years of age when you register (no exceptions).
  2. Have a valid High School diploma or GED certificate from an accredited school. If you have never taken a class at GTCC before and have a high school diploma from another country, it will need to be validated through our Student Success Center. You may email Jesse Cross at jlcross@gtcc.edu to have this done. This will be checked on the first day of class.
  3. Must have a U.S. government-issued Social Security Card, signed and non-laminated (a permanent resident card, such as a Visa, or any other alien identification card will not be accepted) and MUST have an unexpired Government issued photo ID such as a Driver’s License or Passport (must bring a copy of this to the first class).

You MUST bring all of the above documents to the first class for verification by the instructor.  If you do not meet ALL these qualifications, you will be dismissed from the course and will receive a refund of the registration fee.

If GTCC already has your official transcripts on file, you will not need to bring your high school diploma or GED certificate to the first class and will only need to bring your original Social Security card and a copy of your Photo ID. If you are unsure if your official transcript is on file or not, you may email Amy Byerly at aeleonard@gtcc.edu and she can check for you.

On successful completion of a Nursing Assistant training course at GTCC (NA I, or NA I Refresher), you must pass the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry exam in order to be listed on the Nurse Aide I Registry. Registry listing is a requirement in North Carolina to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  GTCC is a designated in-facility testing center for the Nurse Aide Registry Exam. Testing at GTCC allows you as a student to test in an environment with equipment you are familiar with working around. Students can schedule both the written and the skills exam by setting up an account with Credentia. Please visit credentia.com to start that process. IMPORTANT NOTE:  Be sure to use the correct five digit Program Number/Training Code that is located on the certificate you received at graduation.

GTCC faculty and staff are not able to assist students with setting up their Credentia accounts.

Remember the Open Labs are available for you, even after you graduate, to return to GTCC and practice your skills prior to your test date. There is an Instructor available to assist you during every Open Lab date. For a schedule of Open Lab dates, times and locations, click on the NA OPEN LAB SCHEDULE (See below FAQ).
