GTCC, shift_ed offer short-term workforce training scholarship

Guilford Technical Community College and shift_ed have partnered to offer short-term workforce scholarships to assist recent Guilford County Schools (GCS) graduates earn an in-demand credential by eliminating financial barriers.
Guilford County School graduates, who graduated in the past five years (classes 2021- 2025) and currently live in either ZIP code 27260, 27262, 27401, 27405 or 27406 are eligible to apply for scholarships to cover all course fees, course materials and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and some certification exams.
“We say this all the time in our work - there isn’t a talent gap in Guilford County; there is an opportunity gap,” says Wendy Poteat, president and CEO, shift_ed. “Our hope is that this scholarship eliminates financial burdens for students so they can gain the skills necessary to build a bright future for themselves.”
Certificate programs eligible for the scholarship include programs in Health Sciences, Aviation Quick Careers, Construction, Public Safety, Truck Driver Training and Welding. The scholarship opportunities apply to courses in these programs beginning before June 30, 2026.
“This is an impactful opportunity for Guilford County Schools graduates to earn an in-demand, industry-recognized credential and move quickly into the workforce while supported by scholarships,” said Beth Pitonzo, Ph.D., senior vice president for college and workforce instruction. “It is a simple process to apply for the classes and the scholarships to quickly get students on the path to a new job.”
