From early college to Howard University, Moniquwa Hill finds her path at GTCC

When Moniquwa Hill enrolled at Guilford Technical Community College, she was already taking steps toward her future.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Hill connected with GTCC through its early/middle college program while she was still in high school, earning college credits before receiving her diploma. Originally from Troy, North Carolina, Hill had already begun building a strong foundation toward something bigger.
Hill recently graduated from the paralegal technology program and is taking the next step toward becoming an attorney through Howard University this fall, where she’ll study political science.
“I have always been interested in the study of law,” Hill said. “During a career fair here at GTCC, I learned more about what paralegals do. Since I want to become an attorney one day, I realized this would be a great way to gain experience and get my foot in the door.”
That career fair moment helped sharpen her direction. What had begun as an opportunity to earn early college credit had evolved into a clear, purposeful pathway toward her future in the legal field.
Like many students’ navigating college for the first time, Hill encountered challenges along the way. One of the most significant lessons she learned was how to ask for help when she needed it.
“Learning to ask for help was the greatest difficulty I faced,” she said. “My professors reassured me that asking for help is no flaw. Their support helped me overcome that challenge.”
Faculty mentorship played a meaningful role in Hill’s experience, particularly the guidance she received from Paralegal Instructor Teddi Carr.
“Moniquwa is a shining example of how quiet determination can lead to great success,” Carr said. “Her journey is just beginning, and I have no doubt she will go on to do extraordinary things. It would not surprise me if she became a Supreme Court justice one day.”
“All the professors I have met during my time at GTCC have impacted my life in different ways,” Hill said. “However, Professor Teddi Carr is someone I will always remember. From my first class with her, she has been very supportive of my journey in this program and my future in the legal field.”
Through the support of faculty and the hands-on learning opportunities in the paralegal technology program, Hill has developed the skills and confidence to pursue her long-term goals.
For students considering their own college journey, Hill encourages them to take full advantage of everything GTCC has to offer.
“To those who are considering attending GTCC, I would advise them to get involved,” she said. “School is so much more enjoyable when you’re having fun and are around like-minded people.”
Her mother once walked these same halls. Now, Moniquwa Hill has crossed the same stage, on her way to Howard.
