JAMESTOWN, N.C. (April 17, 2025) – Starting this fall, Guilford Technical Community College is adding a Biotechnology – Bioprocess Manufacturing Technology program to its more than 70 current course offerings.
According to the NC Biotechnology Center, the state has a growing biotechnology industry with over 75,000 currently employed by over 830 life science companies.
The new GTCC program is designed for students aiming for high-demand careers as bioprocess technicians, pharmaceutical production specialists, quality assurance analysts, and biotech lab assistants in industries such as biomanufacturing, bioengineering, and biopharmaceuticals.
Students will learn to apply scientific principles and technical skills in support of biologists and biotechnologists in research, industrial, and government settings.
“North Carolina’s research triangle has long been recognized as a national biotechnology research and development center. Now the manufacturing arm of the industry is moving west into Guilford County and the demand for skilled employees in the field is increasing,” said Beth Pitonzo, Ph.D., senior vice president of instruction at GTCC. “When students complete this new biotechnology program at GTCC they will possess the skills to qualify for numerous positions in a variety of bioprocessing and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries.”
Coursework, most of which is hands-on, includes topics such as fermentation technology, cell culturing, protein purification, biologic synthesis, assaying and testing, quality control, industrial microbiology, bioprocessing, chromatography and bio-separation, genetic technology, laboratory and hazardous materials safety, and computer applications.
“We are excited to start our new bioprocess manufacturing program at GTCC,” said Anne Simpson, GTCC dean of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. “This program is designed to address the growing needs of the biotechnology industry in Guilford County by providing students with the skills and training needed to work in the expanding biotechnology field.”
Graduates will receive an Associate in Applied Science. The program can be completed over five semesters and includes coursework in biology, bioprocess manufacturing, biotechnology, chemistry, mathematics, and general education.
