With the fall 2025 semester underway, the GTCC Student Government Association (SGA) is already busy with its new leadership at the helm. Elected in March 2025, the new officers will hold their roles for one year.

Leading the GTCC SGA this year as president is Kevin Daniels, alongside fellow officers, Tiyah Witherspoon, vice president of special events, Crystabelle Nwameme, vice president of clubs and Raodatou Oumarou as secretary.

The purpose of the SGA is to promote the general welfare of students by representing the student body's interests, needs, and concerns, and by keeping students informed about issues that affect them. The SGA is also responsible for all student clubs and special events for students on all five GTCC campuses.

Stepping up from a senator role on the High Point campus, where he organized fitness initiatives for students, Daniels is ready to tackle and learn from his new leadership responsibilities.

“I’m most excited about the organizational development that I can obtain from being SGA president,” said Daniels, a Southern Guilford High School graduate. “I aspire to be more organized, and this is going to take me to another level of time management and management of others as well. I want to be a physical therapist, and I’ll need to lead a team, and this opportunity is a big steppingstone and a catalyst for my future.”

The associate in science major was a little nervous at first to pursue his SGA career, which also gives him a seat on the GTCC board of trustees. Still, thanks to a subtle push by Jarian Johnson, assistant director of student life, he’s ready.

“Jarian likes to throw us into water, and he suggested I run for president,” Daniels shared. “I know being president is going to take me somewhere I haven’t been before. It was like, ‘wow, I can really do this!’ I can take opportunities I couldn’t before and reach those goals and avenues I couldn’t before.”

With a goal of transferring to Winston-Salem State University for a physical therapy degree, he’s already seen his self-confidence and social skills blossom since joining the SGA.

“Coming from a quiet background, my social skills have just taken off now. Being a part of the SGA really forces me to grow my social skills. I now leap at it. I had to borrow other people’s eyes to see what they were seeing and gain more self-confidence.”

Joining Daniels as vice president of special events is Eastern Alamance High School grad Witherspoon. The radiology major has a mind for science, but a heart for service with her goals in her role this year.

“I hope to help create a more inclusive and engaged campus community,” said Witherspoon. “My goal is to strengthen communication between students and the administration, advocate for student needs, and support initiatives that improve campus life. I want to inspire more students to get involved, whether through leadership, clubs, or events, and ensure that everyone feels heard and valued. Along the way, I’m excited to grow as a leader, deepen my connections within the college, and lay the groundwork for meaningful change.”

Her inspiration for running her vice president came from a very special mentor.

“I was inspired to run for an SGA officer position during a time when I felt like I was stuck in a very dark place. I knew I had the potential to become an incredible leader, but I had no idea where or how to start.

“My mentor played a huge role in helping me find the strength to take that first step. His encouragement, support, and belief in me helped me push forward when I couldn’t see the path myself. Running for SGA was my way of turning pain into purpose. I wanted to be a voice for other students going through tough times, and to help create a campus community where people feel heard, seen, and supported.”

Much like Daniels, Witherspoon’s confidence has thrived thanks to the support of family, faculty, and fellow Titans.

“My leadership journey didn’t begin with confidence; it began with courage, faith, and the love of people who believed in me before I believed in myself.  What I love most about GTCC is the sense of opportunity it gives me. Whether it’s the support from faculty, the encouragement from mentors, or the chance to be part of leadership through SGA, I feel like I’m truly growing both academically and personally. GTCC isn’t just where I’m earning a degree, it’s where I found my voice, my confidence, and a real path forward.”

Southwest Guilford High School graduate, Nwameme is the vice president of clubs and pursing an associate in science - general studies. With an already busy extracurricular schedule as the social media manager and member of Model United Nations and African Student Association, she’s also a member of the Transfer Club and Business Club – thus making her the perfect fit for her new SGA officer position.

“I hope to successfully encourage students across all GTCC campuses to participate more in the clubs and student organizations GTCC offers,” said Nwameme. “I want to make it easier for students to attend those meetings and events so they don’t miss out on the activities happening on campus.

“I also hope to help spark more interest from students in SGA and the events we organize. I think that current SGA officers are role models, and I’m proud to take on that responsibility and hope to make a positive impact in our community.”

The honors program student also speaks of continuing to boost her leadership skills and self-confidence in her new SGA officer role.

“Most importantly, I was inspired by the idea of being able to help other students step out of their comfort zone and find a place where they can explore their interests and passions. Fall 2024 was a new beginning for me, and I was definitely not knowledgeable about all the fun events that were happening on campus. I want to make sure that students are easily informed about all the campus activities.”

Heading up the role of SGA secretary is Oumarou, a graduate of Grimsley High School. The engineering major plans to transfer to a four-year school and pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering.

She has big plans as secretary for the SGA.

“By joining SGA, I wanted to get more involved on campus and be a voice for students like me, those who are new, international, or just trying to find their place, like I once was,” said Oumarou.

“I’m most excited to be a part of something meaningful with the main objective of connecting students as we grow together. I enjoy being organized and behind the scenes, so I look forward to helping everything run smoothly while also learning more about leadership and teamwork.”

Proud of her journey and time at GTCC, Oumarou is excited to give back to her fellow Titans and to the college.

“As someone who wants to get involved in anything and everything, what I love most about GTCC is the number of opportunities available to students. I also love what a diverse community we have; there are students from so many different backgrounds! GTCC has opened a lot of doors for me, and I think being part of SGA is my way of giving back.”
