Frequently Asked Questions – GTCC Students

You will need to have the following with you when you arrive at the Assessment Center:

  1. A valid photo ID. (A copy of your ID on your phone is not acceptable.)
  2. The name of your instructor.
  3. The name of your course.
  4. If your test is online please have your login information written down, not on your phone, when you arrive at the Assessment Center.

Check with your instructor to ascertain if you need to bring

  1. Scantron (The Assessment Center does not furnish this item.)
  2. Calculator (The Assessment Center does not have calculators to loan out.) If a calculator is allowed, please ensure you bring the one specified by your instructor,
  3. Notes (If yes, know the specifics; half sheet of paper, 3 4X6 cards, etc.)

Headphones are among the prohibited items for students testing in the Assessment Center. Other items include:

  • Smart watches
  • Smart glasses
  • Fitness trackers
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Headphones (The Assessment Center does have ear plugs should you need them.)

Your instructor will identify if a restroom break is allowed during your test. You will be informed prior to starting your test if a break is or is not permitted.

The information provided to you should have indicated that you would need to contact your instructor. He or she will be able to provide you with information regarding if the test was delivered to the Assessment Center, what is the beginning or ending date, how long is the test and what you need to bring. Assessment Center personnel do not provide this information as the instructor may have more than one session and instructions for each section may be different.

Generally speaking, you do not need an appointment to test in the Assessment Center. However, there are very specific tests that do require an appointment.

Over the phone it is extremely difficult to identify anyone with a high degree certainty. We will ask questions in an attempt to verify the caller’s identity but if there is a mistake in the responses given then the process stops and we offer that the individual can come by the Assessment Center to pick up a copy of his or her scores.

Typically, an instructor will only have his or her tests available for a short period, and they encourage students to come in before the last day. However, the only time you need to make an appointment for a GTCC faculty test is if you have testing accommodations that have been approved by DAS.

Frequently Asked Questions – CLEP

The College Level Examination Program allows students to save money, save time, and achieve their college goals. Developed by the College Board, students who earn passing scores on CLEP® exams can earn college credit and accelerate their education by allowing them to move into more advanced classes sooner.

Currently each CLEP® exam costs $107 ($87 CLEP® test fee + $20 admin fee). The $87 is payable online directly to collegeboard.org. The $20 admin fee is payable at GTCC Cashier’s office.

GTCC accepts 25 of the 33 CLEP® exams available for course credit (see list).

To earn course credit through CLEP®, you must request that your scores be sent to GTCC. The Registrar will review the scores and recommend courses for credit on an Advanced Standing Certificate, which is sent to the department chair in your program of study for approval.

Go to the CLEP® website and click on the link “Get Started with CLEP®.” Follow the steps to identify Guilford Technical Community College as your testing center, decide which exam(s) to take, register, pay, and prepare/study for your exams. The next step is to make an appointment with the GTCC Assessment Center office and pay the $20 administrative fee at the GTCC Cashier’s office. Be sure to keep your receipt – you must bring it with you to your testing appointment.

Before scheduling your CLEP test, please go to CollegeBoard to register and pay for the CLEP exam of your choosing. You will need the ticket/voucher number in order to schedule your CLEP exam at GTCC.

Frequently Asked Questions – Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Exam

If you are an online student no appointment is necessary. Just come to the Jamestown Assessment Center during our Office hours.

If you are a student in a face-to-face class, your first option is to work with your instructor and take the MOS certification exam during class.

Before scheduling your test, please create your Certiport account by going to the Certiport website and following their instructions.

Scheduling an Appointment for MOS Testing

You will receive an email reminder 24 hours before your test.

At this time GTCC offers MOS testing only to GTCC students who are currently enrolled in class where MOS testing is a requirement. For example. CTS-130 is a Microsoft Excel class and as such the MOS certification test offered will be Excel. CIS-110 covers Word, PowerPoint, and Excel so students have the option to choose which certification exam they will attempt.

MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certifications are offered in Word (2016 and 2019), Excel (2016 and 2019), PowerPoint (2016 and 2019), Outlook (2016), Access (2016), Associate (Officer 365 and Office 2019). Beginning Fall Semester 2019, a portion of the student’s participation grade includes taking a MOS certification test.

There is no course requirement for CIS-110 students to take a MOS certification exam. The test is available for CIS-110 students to take as a personal achievement but the exam is not a course requirement.

For students in face-to-face classes, please work with your instructor to take the exam in a computer lab on the campus you attend. Online students may come to the Jamestown Assessment Center during operating hours and request a MOS exam. No appointment is necessary.

It’s a two-step process. First, go to Certiport and create your account. You must have your account created before you arrive at the Assessment Center, it can be a lengthy process.

Second, come to the Assessment Center and take your test. The MOS test no longer requires an appointment.

Certiport does offer a remote option for MOS testing. For further details and to set up an appointment, please contact your instructor.

At the end of the exam your score will be displayed. Your instructor will be able to retrieve your scores from Certiport and discuss them with you.

According to Microsoft both the Excel and Word MOS exams are timed at 50 minutes.

Exams are primarily performance-based and conducted in a "live," or simulated, environment.

Yes, the course that you’re in (CIS-110 or CTS-130) is a great foundation. There are also study guides published online and in paper format.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the GTCC Assessment Center is closed until further notice and currently unable to offer the MOS testing in a face-to-face scenario. However, for CIS-110 classes the MOS test is offered as an option for students who score an A in the class. The MOS test, is not a requirement for passing the course and it will not impact your course grade.

Certiport is offering a test from home option. For more details please contact your instructor.
