Frequently Asked Questions – GTCC Students

You will need to have the following with you when you arrive at the Assessment Center:

  1. A valid photo ID. (A copy of your ID on your phone is not acceptable.)
  2. The name of your instructor.
  3. The name of your course.
  4. If your test is online please have your login information written down, not on your phone, when you arrive at the Assessment Center.

Check with your instructor to ascertain if you need to bring

  1. Scantron (The Assessment Center does not furnish this item.)
  2. Calculator (The Assessment Center does not have calculators to loan out.) If a calculator is allowed, please ensure you bring the one specified by your instructor,
  3. Notes (If yes, know the specifics; half sheet of paper, 3 4X6 cards, etc.)

Headphones are among the prohibited items for students testing in the Assessment Center. Other items include:

  • Smart watches
  • Smart glasses
  • Fitness trackers
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Headphones (The Assessment Center does have ear plugs should you need them.)

Your instructor will identify if a restroom break is allowed during your test. You will be informed prior to starting your test if a break is or is not permitted.

The information provided to you should have indicated that you would need to contact your instructor. He or she will be able to provide you with information regarding if the test was delivered to the Assessment Center, what is the beginning or ending date, how long is the test and what you need to bring. Assessment Center personnel do not provide this information as the instructor may have more than one session and instructions for each section may be different.

Generally speaking, you do not need an appointment to test in the Assessment Center. However, there are very specific tests that do require an appointment.

Over the phone it is extremely difficult to identify anyone with a high degree certainty. We will ask questions in an attempt to verify the caller’s identity but if there is a mistake in the responses given then the process stops and we offer that the individual can come by the Assessment Center to pick up a copy of his or her scores.

Typically, an instructor will only have his or her tests available for a short period, and they encourage students to come in before the last day. However, the only time you need to make an appointment for a GTCC faculty test is if you have testing accommodations that have been approved by DAS.

Correspondence testing is only available at GTCC’s Jamestown Campus Assessment Center from Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Proctored testing for another school involves a two-step process. First, you must notify your school that you want to test elsewhere and then the school will normally have you fill out a proctor form. Ultimately, if your school agrees to your request for an outside proctor the second step is to schedule an appointment at GTCC, via our online schedule –  www.registerblast.com/gtcc/exam . For additional instructions regarding RegisterBlast go to the question – What is RegisterBlast and how do I use it?

In most cases yes, GTCC will be able to accommodate proctor requests. You must first contact your instructor and/or your school’s testing facility and ascertain if an external proctor is acceptable. You will be advised of any additional test procedures required by your test upon your arrival at the Assessment Center.

Students accessing prohibited items or information during an exam will have their exam stopped and will be asked to leave the Assessment Center.

The testing instruction provided by your school will identify if a restroom break is permitted during your test. You will be informed prior to starting your test if a break is or is not permitted. While the Assessment Center staff will not prevent you from taking a restroom break, if it is not allowed, we will stop your test and inform the school of the incident and they will adjudicate and determine if you can continue the test.

That is a decision reached by various departments within GTCC not by the Assessment Center. As an online student, this link may help: Online Learning

The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) test is one part of the criteria for admittance into one of GTCC’s limited enrollment programs associated with health careers. The TEAS test is a high demand test. The number of students desiring to take the TEAS test increases substantially prior to semester breaks, end of terms, during registration periods, and as program deadlines approach.  Plan accordingly to avoid testing delays.

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS®) is a three hour and twenty-nine minute test that is broken into four parts and consists of multiple-choice questions covering the following:

  • Reading (64 minutes / 53 items)
  • Math (54 minutes / 36 items)
  • Science (63 minutes / 53 items)
  • English (28 minutes / 28 items)

*This version of TEAS does permit the use of a calculator during the math section. However, the calculator is embedded within the test itself you do not need to bring a calculator with you.

Due to staffing concerns, TEAS testing is only available at the GTCC Jamestown Assessment Center, 601 E. Main St. Jamestown, NC 27282 (campus location is Applied Technologies Building Room 220). TEAS testing is available Monday – Thursday at 9:30 am and 2:00 pm.

You must have the following items with you when you arrive to take the TEAS test:

  • A photo ID, such as a valid, unexpired driver's license, state ID card or passport with photo, address, and signature. A photo of your id is not acceptable.
  • GTCC students must have a blue TEAS pass from the Limited Enrollment Programs Office, in order to test OR a TEAS test pass stating you have completed the online orientation. GTCC students arriving at the Assessment Center without the blue TEAS pass or the online TEAS test pass will be referred to Limited Enrollment Programs Office and the current appointment will be canceled. (This is not requiredfor non-GTCC students)
  • Your ATI user ID and password. (Arriving for your appointment without an ATI user id and password may result in the rescheduling of your appointment, due to the time necessary to create the ID.) We also suggest you log into the ATI website within 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment to confirm your user ID and password are working correctly.

A receipt from the GTCC cashier’s office confirming payment.

  • Reading – paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions

An individual may take the TEAS test twice in a six month period.

There has been an increase in TEAS fees, effective immediately.

The testing fee for GTCC students is $73.00 and Non-GTCC students will be charged $98.00.

If you are looking for study material the ATI website suggests the use of the TEAS Study Manual, sixth edition. Do not use the outdated TEAS V study material to prepare yourself for this test. Study material can be purchased from GTCC’s Jamestown Book Store or from the ATI website www.atitesting.com.

Frequently Asked Questions – TABE

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE®) is used for admission to our BLET, Math Success, and College Transitions programs. This test is only available for entrance into GTCC coursework. The test takes approximately an hour and a half per part, so please accommodate your testing time accordingly.

Individuals entering one of the public safety programs such as BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Tract), EMT basic or intermediate and/or surrounding Fire Departments may be required to complete an entrance test before entering their desired program. GTCC’s Jamestown Assessment Center is able to proctor such tests through in-house agreements.

Please contact the agency for which you are testing to confirm dates during which testing may occur.

An appointment is no longer necessary for applicants who need to take a TABE test. Please come to the Applied Technologies Building Room 220 on the Jamestown Campus when you’re ready to test. Our office hours are as follows:

Monday – Thursday 8:00 am – 9:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. All tests must be started at least one hour before closing.

Frequently Asked Questions – CLEP

The College Level Examination Program allows students to save money, save time, and achieve their college goals. Developed by the College Board, students who earn passing scores on CLEP® exams can earn college credit and accelerate their education by allowing them to move into more advanced classes sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions – Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Exam

If you are an online student no appointment is necessary. Just come to the Jamestown Assessment Center during our Office hours.

If you are a student in a face-to-face class, your first option is to work with your instructor and take the MOS certification exam during class.

At this time GTCC offers MOS testing only to GTCC students who are currently enrolled in class where MOS testing is a requirement. For example. CTS-130 is a Microsoft Excel class and as such the MOS certification test offered will be Excel. CIS-110 covers Word, PowerPoint, and Excel so students have the option to choose which certification exam they will attempt.

MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certifications are offered in Word (2016 and 2019), Excel (2016 and 2019), PowerPoint (2016 and 2019), Outlook (2016), Access (2016), Associate (Officer 365 and Office 2019). Beginning Fall Semester 2019, a portion of the student’s participation grade includes taking a MOS certification test.

CIS-110 covers Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Students are encouraged to take the MOS exam in Word. However, that does not prevent students from taking the MOS exam in other aspects of MS Office such as PowerPoint or Excel.

For students in face-to-face classes, please work with your instructor to take the exam in a computer lab on the campus you attend. Online students may come to the Jamestown Assessment Center during operating hours and request a MOS exam. No appointment is necessary.

It’s a two-step process. First, go to Certiport and create your account. You must have your account created before you arrive at the Assessment Center, it can be a lengthy process.

Second, come to the Assessment Center and take your test. The MOS test no longer requires an appointment.

At the end of the exam your score will be displayed. Your instructor will be able to retrieve your scores from Certiport and discuss them with you.

According to Microsoft both the Excel and Word MOS exams are timed at 50 minutes.

Exams are primarily performance-based and conducted in a "live," or simulated, environment.

Yes, the course that you’re in (CIS-110 or CTS-130) is a great foundation. There are also study guides published online and in paper format.
