Proctoring Services for GTCC and Non-GTCC Students

The Assessment Center offers GTCC faculty a mechanism to proctor tests for GTCC’s online students, and/or GTCC students unable to attend class on a scheduled test date.

Through its proctors the Assessment Center offers correspondence testing for students of other schools and universities this service includes both paper and online exams. A proctoring fee of $10.00 per hour is assessed for non-GTCC students.

In addition to faculty testing both GTCC and non-GTCC students the Assessment Center also proctors TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills), TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education), CLEP (College Level Examination Program), and WorkKeys.

Effective July 1, 2018 price increase announced for GTCC students taking TEAS test. More information can be found in frequently asked questions – TEAS.

Check with your instructor to ascertain if you need to bring

  1. Scantron (The Assessment Center does not furnish this item.)
  2. Calculator (The Assessment Center does not have calculators to loan out.) If a calculator is allowed, please ensure you bring the one specified by your instructor,

  • Sunglasses
  • Headphones (The Assessment Center does have ear plugs should you need them.)

Your instructor will identify if a restroom break is allowed during your test. You will be informed prior to starting your test if a break is or is not permitted.

The information provided to you should have indicated that you would need to contact your instructor. He or she will be able to provide you with information regarding if the test was delivered to the Assessment Center, what is the beginning or ending date, how long is the test and what you need to bring. Assessment Center personnel do not provide this information as the instructor may have more than one session and instructions for each section may be different.

Generally speaking, you do not need an appointment to test in the Assessment Center. However, there are very specific tests that do require an appointment.

Over the phone it is extremely difficult to identify anyone with a high degree certainty. We will ask questions in an attempt to verify the caller’s identity but if there is a mistake in the responses given then the process stops and we offer that the individual can come by the Assessment Center to pick up a copy of his or her scores.

Correspondence testing is only available at GTCC’s Jamestown Assessment Center from Monday-Thursday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Proctored testing for another school involves a two-step process. First, you must notify your school that you want to test elsewhere and then the school will normally have you fill out a proctor form. Ultimately, if your school agrees to your request for an outside proctor the second step is to schedule an appointment at GTCC, via our online scheduler –  www.registerblast.com/gtcc/exam. For additional instructions regarding registerblast go to the question – What is RegisterBlast and how do I use it?

In most cases yes, GTCC will be able to accommodate proctor requests. You must first contact your instructor and/or your school’s testing facility and ascertain if an external proctor is acceptable. If your school approves your request you can move forward with contacting GTCC to schedule a date and time for your test.

  1. Go to our online scheduler www.registerblast.com/gtcc/exam
  2. Select Proctoring Service for non-GTCC Students

Frequently Asked Questions – TABE

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE®) is used for admission to our BLET, Math Success, and College Transitions programs. This test is only available for entrance into GTCC coursework. The test takes approximately an hour and a half per part, so please accommodate your testing time accordingly.

TABE® testing is offered during regular assessment hours at the Jamestown campus. TABE® testing is available at other campuses according to the schedule shown on that campus.

Individuals entering one of the public safety programs such as BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Tract), EMT basic or intermediate and/or surrounding Fire Departments may be required to complete an entrance test before entering their desired program. GTCC’s Jamestown Assessment Center is able to proctor such tests through in-house agreements.

Please contact the agency for which you are testing to confirm dates during which testing may occur.

Frequently Asked Questions – CLEP

The College Level Examination Program allows students to save money, save time, and achieve their college goals. Developed by the College Board, students who earn passing scores on CLEP® exams can earn college credit and accelerate their education by allowing them to move into more advanced classes sooner.

Currently each CLEP® exam costs $107 ($87 CLEP® test fee + $20 admin fee). The $87 is payable online directly to collegeboard.org. The $20 admin fee is payable at GTCC Cashier’s office.

GTCC accepts 25 of the 33 CLEP® exams available for course credit (see list).

To earn course credit through CLEP®, you must request that your scores be sent to GTCC. The Registrar will review the scores and recommend courses for credit on an Advanced Standing Certificate, which is sent to the department chair in your program of study for approval.

Go to the CLEP® website at https://clep.collegeboard.org/ and click on the link “Get Started with CLEP®.” Follow the steps to identify Guilford Technical Community College as your testing center, decide which exam(s) to take, register, pay, and prepare/study for your exams. The next step is to make an appointment with the GTCC Assessment Center office and pay the $20 administrative fee at the GTCC Cashier’s office. Be sure to keep your receipt – you must bring it with you to your testing appointment.

First complete your registration at CLEP.org as you will need info from this registration to complete the process of scheduling at GTCC. You’ll use GTCC’s online scheduler – RegisterBlast to make an appointment to test.
