In the event you need to work remotely, here are some tools to help and keep you connected.

Stay Safe and Secure

While working off campus, please be aware that you will not be protected by some of the security controls delivered on-campus such as our firewalls and browsing protection. Here are our recommendations:

  • Avoid using open or public (unencrypted) WiFi for GTCC business.
  • Ensure all devices you may use are up to date and have anti-virus installed.
  • Never provide your password to anyone or share your account access.
  • Maintain the appropriate separation of GTCC data and your personal devices, especially sensitive or business critical data.
  • Keep your GTCC data on the appropriate resources (GTCC OneDrive, Teams or SharePoint).
  • Use your GTCC email account or the GTCC Teams application for business communication. Do not use your personal accounts for GTCC business communication.
Use SharePoint online or OneDrive to control access to GTCC data.

How do I Stay Connected?

Make sure you have Internet service at home and your personal computer is connected to the Internet. If you don’t have access to Internet at home, please visit the below links to companies offering free and reduced rate services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The websites below are being updated often, so please click on the link to view most current information.

  • FCC agreement stating that providers will waive late fees, not cutoff service for lack of payment, and open hot-spots.
  • NC Dept of Information Technology provides a comprehensive guide and interactive map to COVID-19 Internet service offerings for the state of North Carolina.
  • Spectrum COVID-19 response offering special discounts and free Internet and WiFi for 60 days to students and teacher households who currently don’t have Internet or WiFi service.
  • Comcast COVID-19 response offering free WiFi for two (2) months to low income families plus all Xfinity hot-spots are free to the public during this time.
  • NorthState COVID-19 response has no special offers but they are following the FCC agreement.
  • AT&T COVID-19 response offers open hot-spots and unlimited data to existing customers, and $10/month plans to low income families.
  • Verizon COVID-19 response has no special offers but they are following the FCC agreement.
  • Sprint COVID-19 response follows FCC agreement, provides unlimited data to existing customers, and, starting March 17, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge.
  • T-Mobile COVID-19 response follows the FCC agreement, plus provides unlimited data to existing customers and, coming soon, will allow all handsets to enable hot-spots for 60 days at no extra charge.

Locate the peripherals you’ll need to be productive remotely. Think about live conferencing. Does your computer have a built-in microphone and speaker? Do you need a headset for your phone?

For most GTCC faculty and staff, working remotely will not require VPN. The following applications can be accessed from the web:

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to access and use the GTCC computing services from off-campus locations as if you were on campus.

Using Microsoft Teams

You will be able to work productively from your remote location by using Microsoft Teams.  You can use Teams to:

  • Schedule and attend meetings
  • Share documents
  • Conduct chats/conversations
  • Communicate through audio and video calls using your computer’s microphone and speakers or a headset.

You can access your voicemail services even when you are away from your GTCC location.
